A proposed MTR station for Ma Wan? Is a Park Island MTR station coming?
Recently there has been talk of an MTR station at Park Island. It seems MTR Corporation may soon conduct a feasibility study into providing an MTR station at Park Island.
Primary factors, I would think, are customer demand and profitability, and also whether a station is physically possible to build.
See here for the proposed location of the Park Island MTR station: Location of station.
Both the Airport Express and the Tung Chung line go though Tsing Ma Bridge above Ma Wan so the proposal seems to be building a platform on Tsing Ma Bridge and then building a ststation with a lift up and down to the train line.
My feeling is that both Ma Wan residents, and Hong Kong residents in general would overwhelmingly support having an MTR station at Ma Wan. Whether it would be profitable I am not sure. I presume MTR would have a financial model that calculates not just trips to and from Ma Wan, but also the increased use that residents would make of the MTR network as a whole, as well as likely increased customers visits to Ma Wan.
The concept seems to be supported by Justin Tseng, a candidate for the upcoming Tsuen Wan Rural West elections. If you support this proposal, and if you are elligable to vote on 6 November, you may wish to vote for him.
Did you see that they are cancelling the Ferry to Tsuen Wan at the end of the year?
ReplyDeletereally is that true?
ReplyDeletere mtr station, i heard about this rumor for many times now but i have yet to see any concrete action (like a feasibility study)
Is the Ferry Cancellation True? It looks like it as there is a notice from Kai Shing posted by the lift in my building. For me it will be a mild negative as I always use the ferry to go to Tsuen Wan and not the bus.
ReplyDeleteI have not once used that Tsuen Wan ferry. Central one of course is used by many people, but who goes to Tsuen Wan anyhow? Old and retired people? Park Island is changing, and everyone can see the people moving here are of the HK island type looking for a cleaner place. The Tsuen Wan residents who were lucky to buy in during SARs are being bought out by higher income earners so this was bound to happen.
ReplyDeleteMTR I can't see it happening any time soon although it would be great both for convienience and for people who work anywhere on HK island.
the Tsuen Wan ferry is obviously not JUST for people going to Tsuen Wan. It's a good connection point for people working in the New Territories
ReplyDeletedidn't notice that all people who move here come from HK Island, not in my block, not the people I know anyway
erm if you have never used the Tsuen Wan Ferry before, how do you know who does and doesn't use it?
ReplyDeleteI use it and I am neither old or retired, you might as well ask who uses the TW bus and other buses then if Central is indeed where everything happens !
Not sure whether new comers to PI are the "HK island type" either, but seems like we have people with little (if any) knowledge about the geography of HK: TW ferries are only for old and retired ppl ... what's the next joke :) :)
ReplyDeleteI usually work on HK island side too, but if I get duties in Tuen Mun / Tsuen Wan Law Courts, the TW ferry is the most convenient.... wish I can soon retire, but not in the coming 30 years unfortunately (maybe I should try the Mark Six more often :)
"The Tsuen Wan residents who were lucky to buy in during SARs are being bought out by higher income earners so this was bound to happen."
ReplyDeleteThese comments are irresponsible and ignorant. This person think of themself is the majority and ignore everything else around them.
Like what others said, Tsuen Wan Ferry is needed by people who uses the East and West rail. The ferry cancellation will many people and they should have given the resident more notice on this issue. I am sure most ppl are willing to accept another price increase in order to keep the service running.
Ma Wan MTR would be nice, but I doubt it will happen, not enough people here to warrant an extra station. An additional stop will mean they need extra cars in the Tung Chung line to keep the service running and I doubt the extra revenue will be enough to cover this.
Discussion has started to develop additional 4500 flats in Ma wan South. This should be crucial point for MTR to plan building Ma Wan station. Additional cars to Tung Chung will be needed with the new development planned by HKSAR in ring Chung area
DeleteThe lease for the Noah's arc ends in 2016 I believe. After that, I reckon that site is perfect to be replaced with a retail, carpark and MTR station. It would not suprise me if the Govt have earmarked that space for the development. Is a welcome development for Ma Wan residents and also for HK people in general who want to visit Ma Wan.
ReplyDeleteNope,Noah's Ark is still there
DeleteMTR station is a great idea. I take the bus to the airport which is fine, but if they linked it up so we can take the MTR from Park Island to Central, or from Park Island to the Airport that would be cool.
ReplyDeleteGood idea but it won't work.
ReplyDeleteTo build a station in Ma Wan it will have to be high up in the Ma Wan Viaduct and be very costly to build as it will have to be connected by many lifts and stairs.
What about the Lantau Link? During construction if an accident would to happen this could potentially close the Lantau Link for many hours.Sure there is a second link to Lantau under construction (Excluding HKZM Bridge) but this will still interfere with the main link from Lantau to Downtown Hong Kong. Trains on the Tung Chung Line and Airport Express will be affected if an accident occurs.
To improve the transport in Ma Wan they should have more buses coming in at shorter intervals. An MTR Station is too costly and unnecessary.
