Chinese Opera on Ma Wan

I recently came across the blog site about Ma Wan Village http://mawanvillagecentral.wordpress.com/.

The site seems to be dormant now, but it did provide some information on what takes place each year in the structure that is erected in the Ma Wan Village, next to the Park Island Estate. Apparently its a traditional Chinese Opera, that performs each year around Chinese New Year.

I never knew what happened there, and now am planning to attend the next one. I would assume foreigner's are more than welcome to attend? Or is this more for a long term Ma Wan villagers only? If someone can clarify or if anyone who is a foreigner in Hong Kong has attended, do feel free to post your comments about the Chinese opera here on this blog.

  1. This performance is different from those at chinese new year. Not really performing for human to see. May be feel uneasy when you know the meaning of that festival.

    1. Anon, thank you very much for the comments. Can you clarify what the festival is? I don't want to be offensive to local custom. Maybe it is that foreigners should not be there. Is it a ghost festival, or worshipping deceased spirits or something? I am really sorry if I appear ignorant here, but I have always wondered what they do in that tent, and also why foreigners seem not to go there.

    2. PI Blogger, today is 14th day of the 7th month according to the Chinese calendar - day of ghost festival in Chinese custom. You would see PI management has set out containers for joss sticks / candles and fire bucket for burning of offerings in various places in PI.

    3. I've been to the festival you mention for the last eight years and have always been made to feel very welcome (that said I live in the village)

  3. Hello, it is my first time to visit your blog. It seems that you are an expert for this Island! Your blog is so addictive.
I lived in the village for many years and could share you some more information for this event.
What you mentioned is the Chinese Opera of Tin Hau Festival. The festival means the birthday of Tin Hau, dated 23rd of March in Lunar Calendar. The duration would normally be 5 days, starting from 20th of March to 24th of March. More events like Lion Dance or even Dragon Dance would be held in the front of Tin Hau Temple (at the old village). Please remember to have a visit on 23rd of March next year (The exact date will be 2/MAY/2013 Thursday). The villagers have to make contribution (around $500- $1000) for the event, but it is completely free for visitors.
By the way, you are also welcomed to visit the opening ceremony of MA WAN RURAL COMMITTEE CENTRE on 11/NOV/2012. There will be Pun-choi cuisine for all villagers.
The location for the rural committee centre is adjacent to the basketball court of our village.

  4. Hello,
I am an architecture student in London. We visited Hong Kong in November as part of a field trip and it was an unforgettable experience. I have a few questions about Ma Wan island if anyone is willing to help me please. I have noticed the Care village on the map. What is the village exactly about?
I am working on a design proposal for a clinic in Ma Wan village. If you have any interesting information about the village to share please do so.. What is the atmosphere/ambiance of the village? What are the inhabitants like?
